Catching Up With Viv & Oak’s Alana Burstein

Cannabis Edibles and Drink Review first spoke with Alana Burstein in May of 2020. We’re thrilled to have had a chance to speak again with Alana and learn the latest with Viv & Oak.

CEDR: To refresh our readers…why did you create Viv & Oak?

Alana: Viv & Oak was created for people like myself that love wine, and the elevated social experience it has, but wants to avoid alcohol. Making us a healthier wine alternative.

CEDR: I remember from our last conversation that a big part of your focus is introducing your beverages as an alternative to alcohol in social settings. How has the pandemic affected your messaging?

Alana: it’s been challenging, no doubt, as the “social” aspect has been sidelined by the pandemic. So, we’ve had to tell our story a little bit through our marketing. That said, our products are selling extremely well, particularly in dispensaries, as more and more people want an elevated drinking experience that does not include alcohol.

CEDR: Any changes to the product lineup?

Alana: Yes. We’re working on single servings right now and expect to begin production in June.

CEDR: What are you learning about consumer preferences?

Alana: Our THC only beverages are our most popular, but I find that for people who are sensitive to THC, the 1:1 (THC to CBD) is a great alternative. Some folks just don’t want to get too high. This is particularly true for the older consumer who (maybe) has never stepped into a dispensary before.

CEDR: Any trends you’re seeing (overall) in the cannabis infused beverage space since the last time we spoke?

Alana: I think that beverages are definitely one of the fastest growing segments right now. So that’s really, really exciting. I see that a lot of people are playing with a lot more terpene and strain specific beverages. They’re trying to be more innovative in that way. Additionally, micro-dosing is really hot!

CEDR: Viv & Oak partnered with a company that makes THC infused popcorn. Could you share a little bit about that?

Alana: The company is based in Berkley, California and is called Pop-Up Potcorn. We just thought it was a great collaboration as it pairs beautifully with our beverages. They have different flavors as well as different ratios and it’s really, really delicious.

CEDR: What’s next?

Alana: Growing our distribution in California and launching our products in additional states.

CEDR: Alana, thanks so much for the update. We look forward to chatting again soon.
